Lawyer’s personal experience

I’ve been a personal injury lawyer for 26 years and I’ve handled every conceivable type of case and in the process have learned quite a bit about anatomy and how a trauma can affect the body. A few years ago, after struggling with a bad back for several years and trying every conservative mode of treatment—-physical therapy, epidural injections, yoga, Pilates—-I relented and ultimately had spinal surgery. I don’t mind admitting that I was more than hesitant to have such an invasive procedure to such a delicate part of my body and after having handled dozens of cases where a client of mine had spinal surgery and made less than a satisfactory recovery, I was reluctant to undergo the procedure. However, the pain I was suffering from coupled with the residual effects it was having on my life outweighed my disinclination to undergo the procedure. While I am still suffering from back issues, they are far less pervasive and I have been able to return to living a much more active life than I was pre-surgery. As a practitioner, the positive aspects that I’ve taken from this experience are a more thorough and comprehensive understanding of what someone with back pain truly suffers from. And how afraid a client must be when faced with the prospect of undergoing a surgery that could leave them crippled or in a state of unending, mind numbing pain. And strangely, after returning to work after a lengthy period of convalescence, and speaking to my clients who suffered from cervical and lumbar spine issues, it became apparent that there was now a bond between us that previously didn’t exist. They seemed to trust me a lot more as I was now more empathetic to their condition and their plight. I can now state with absolute certainty that this experience has allowed me to more clearly understand what they suffer from and how disabling a back injury can be. I imagine that they now trust me more by virtue of having “walked in their shoes” for as long as I have.

If you or a loved one has suffered a spinal injury as a result of the negligence of another party, please call the Law Office of Richard M. Kenny.
