After medical evidence irefutably established that the toxic dust at Ground Zero was causing first responders and those who lived and worked near the site to become sick, Congress finally acted. The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 reopened the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund to first responders and people who lived and/or worked in certain defined exposure areas in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. The Fund compensates for injury, financial and other losses. The Act also created a Treatment Program for those injured. The Fund opened in October 2011 and unless it is extended with additional funding provided, it will close in October 2016, because that is what the James Zadroga Act established. This would be a grave injustice. Based on recent data released by the VCF, the Fund may not have enough money to pay those claimants who have already filed claims. In addition, many more people are becoming sick who will not be able to file a claim if the VCF closes. We urge you to support the efforts to permanently re-fund the VCF so that all deserving claimants have an opportunity to file their claims and receive compensation.
