Uber CEO’s Parents Involved in Boating Accident

On Memorial Day Weekend, the parents of Uber CEO Travis Kalanick were involved in a deadly boating accident near their home in California.

Bonnie Kalanick, 71, died as a result of her injuries. Her husband, Donald, was rushed to a nearby hospital and was listed in serious condition, which later stabilized. Uber confirmed that Kalanick’s parents were the individuals on the boat that reportedly hit a rock in the lake, where the couple had gone boating for years.
On Facebook, Kalanick remembered his parents and wrote:
“Back when I was a kid, we would go 20 miles up to the source of the lake where it becomes a cold, winding river through the Sierras,” he wrote. “Last Friday, near the end of the day, my parents took that same trip. Close to the source, my Mom asked my Dad to take over driving, a switch I’ve seen them do dozens of times before. But this time before they switched, our family dog got in the way, and the wheel turned sharply to the right. My Dad, seeing the boat heading straight for the rocks, swung the steering wheel back, but it was too late. The boat hit the rocks. My seventy-eight year old Dad was thrown into a deep eddy, badly injured with five broken ribs, a broken vertebrae, a broken leg and a collapsed lung. My Mom, still in the boat, unconscious, had most likely died immediately from the impact.”
This devastating accident, taking place right at the beginning of prime summer boating season, shows that anything and everything can happen on the water and it is crucial to pay attention at all times to what you are doing, what other boats around you are doing, and constantly follow the rules and regulations of boat safety and the waters around you.
This summer, be sure to check your boat’s safety preparedness and also make sure all potential drivers are certified and prepared to drive and navigate. The rules of the water should also be reviewed and all passengers should always wear the proper safety gear, including lifejackets, at all times to prevent tragic accidents from occurring.
