Venus Williams has been at the center of national attention lately, and it’s not for her tennis skills this time around. Despite the annual Wimbledon tennis tournament currently taking place, Williams’ car accident from last month has been the main focus.Williams was involved in a car accident in June 9 in her hometown of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The other car involved was being driven by an elderly couple. The male passenger sustained injuries that resulted in his death in a hospital days later. In the original police report about the crash, the local police said that the tennis star was at fault in the crash as a result of “violating the right of way” of the other vehicle involved.Witnesses of the scene told investigators that Williams ran a red light in her Toyota Sequoia S.U.V. just as a vehicle driven by Linda Barson entered the intersection on a green light. Jerome Barson, a passenger in his wife’s 2016 Hyundai Accent, was the one who later died. However, a new statement contradicts this original report. On Friday, the police said they had gathered new evidence that shows “Williams lawfully entered the intersection on a circular green traffic signal” and was traveling north. The police department also released video footage of the crash which shows that a Nissan Altima entered the intersection traveling south. The Altima then made a left turn in front of Williams’s vehicle, “causing her to stop advancing through the intersection to avoid a collision,” the statement says. Williams then continued straight through the intersection “in accordance” with the law. About the same time, the Altima driven by Barson approached a red traffic signal. After the signal had turned green, Barson entered the intersection. The video shows that Barson’s vehicle slammed into the passenger side of Williams’s S.U.V. as the S.U.V. appeared to be leaving the intersection. While this case is still under investigation, it shows the importance of gathering police reports, speaking to witnesses and obtaining video footage to show the accident from all angles and be sure the truth is told.
