The number of New Yorkers that rely on bicycles to get around the city has been on the rise in recent years as the congested gridlock gets worse. Despite the fact that the number of pedestrian accidents in New York City has decreased over the last year, the number of serious accidents involving bicyclists has increased. 23 people were killed in New York City bicycle accidents in 2017 as opposed to the 18 fatalities the year before. In response to this increase in injuries and fatalities, New York City transportation officials have announced a plan that aims to make travel safer for those who opt to use bicycles.
City officials are adding two bike lanes on 26th Street and 29th Street in Midtown. These bike lanes will have protective barriers to make sure that they are used for bicyclists only and will not fall victim to motor vehicles that abuse many city streets by double parking. In December, New York City also announced that they will be building two other protected bike lanes on 13th Street.
It will be interesting to see the impact that these new protections have on bicyclist injuries and fatalities throughout the city. If you have been injured in a bicycle accident, contact us today.
