On Monday morning, there was a massive apartment building fire in Williamsburg that ended up injuring 17 people; among them, a 71-year-old woman. The fire broke out on the fourth floor of the residential building on Penn Street.
The fire quickly became a two-alarm fire, with 25 FDNY units (106 fire and EMS members) responding to the scene. An investigation is currently underway regarding the fire’s origins.
Though one person was critically injured, 13 of the 17 individuals were deemed to have “non-life-threatening” injuries, and three were taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn with minor injuries.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the only apartment building fire to occur in the last week in New York City; only hours prior, a four-alarm fire tore through a three-story commercial building on Third Avenue in East Harlem, and only one day prior, a 13-year-old boy was tragically killed in a massive Brooklyn apartment building fire.
In the four-alarm fire involving the three-story commercial building, four firefighters and one civilian were injured. Of the fire, Chief of Fire Operations John Esposito said, “It’s an older building, which starts to affect the structural stability of the building and makes it dangerous.”
