Manhattan Bus Crash Leaves Dozens Injured

An early evening Manhattan bus crash has left at least 18 people hospitalized and dozens more injured near Peter Cooper Village.

Ropes and Ladders Used to Rescue Victims

The Manhattan bus crash took place at the corner of 1st Avenue and East 23rd Street just before 7:30 p.m. on July 6, 2023.  At that time, a double-decker tour bus reportedly rear-ended then broadsided an MTA X27 bus traveling through the intersection, according to sources from the New York City Fire Department.

Both buses were relatively full when they collided, so significant numbers of passengers required emergency extraction.  FDNY crews even had to deploy ropes and ladders to reach individuals trapped at the top of the tour bus because one of the egresses had been badly damaged in the Manhattan bus crash.

“Units quickly put up some ladders, and used some ropes to lower the injured people down,” explained FDNY Deputy Chief Kevin Murphy of Division 1. “They did a really nice job. All the units worked well together.”

Manhattan Bus Crash Under Investigation

Dozens of individuals received medical attention in the immediate aftermath of the Manhattan bus crash.  At least 18 people had been rushed to area hospitals as of 9:00 p.m., while approximately 60 others were evaluated for injuries at the scene.  Early reports indicate that their injuries ranged from minor cuts and bruises to fractures, none of which appeared to be life-threatening.

“We’re all quite fortunate it was not much worse,” said Deputy Chief Paul Hopper of the FDNY’s EMS Division 1.

Fire Department sources indicate that the Manhattan bus crash remains under investigation at this time.

Bus Accidents Common in New York City

While the cause of this recent collision has not yet been officially determined, these types of incidents are all too common in New York City.  In fact, one study found that there are an average of 23 New York bus accidents per day.

Because of their greater occupant capacity, bus accidents frequently cause more injuries than crashes involving cars and other passenger vehicles.  Any number of parties may be responsible for a bus accident, such as the driver of the bus, another motorist or pedestrian on the road, or someone else altogether.

If you have been seriously injured in a New York City bus accident, it is crucial that you identify and pursue everyone who may be at fault for your injuries within the time permitted by law, known as the Statute of Limitations.  Failure to do so could forever bar you from obtaining full and fair compensation for your losses.

Helping New York Bus Accident Victims for Decades

To make matters worse, you may have significantly less time under New York law to take action in cases involving government entities like the Metropolitan Transit Agency.  This can make an already difficult task seem close to impossible, especially if you have never been in a situation like this before.

Fortunately, there is hope.  If this is your first bus accident, rest assured that it will not be the first for the bus accident attorneys at The Law Office of Richard M. Kenny.  For more than three decades, we have been helping New York bus accident victims and their families get the justice they deserve.  Our firm has successfully obtained over $350 million in verdicts and settlements for injured clients throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.
