New York is a very densely populated city. Our roads are also densely traveled. Millions of cars travel the streets, parkways, bridges, tunnels and highways in and around the tri-state area. Joining these cars are motorcycles.
For many, a motorcycle is a cheaper, smaller alternative to a car. In New York, many choose to ride motorcycles on some of the busiest streets in the world, and do not always follow all of the traffic regulations in order to get around the traffic quicker.
Whenever you take to the roads in a car, you need to always be aware of your surroundings and drive as responsibly and safely as you can. Otherwise, you could be putting yourself and especially those around you in serious danger, motorcyclists included.
Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable to the mistakes of other motorists, as any collision could cause them to suffer catastrophic damage due to their vulnerability and exposure on a motorcycle.
When you are in your car, keep these tips in mind to avoid a dangerous collision with a motorcycle:
- Check your mirrors and blind spots: Most drivers know to check over their shoulders and in their side mirrors whenever they are turning or changing lanes, but many are just looking for a car there. Rather than checking for another car, always be on the lookout for motorcycles, as well.
- Use your turn signal: Even if you see the motorcyclist behind you as you begin to make a turn, you might catch the rider completely off-guard if you fail to use your turn signal. Motorcycles can easily zoom up next to you if they do not think you re turning. Amidst all the blurs a motorcyclist can see while riding, the blinking light of a turn signal stands out due to its brightness.
- Check before opening car doors: Before you open the door to exit when you pull into a spot on the side of the road, always check to see if a motorcyclist is weaving between the stopped cars or is too close to open the door safely.
- Adjust your driving according to road conditions: If it is difficult for you to control your car on a rainy road, it is probably even more difficult for a motorcyclist. When the conditions are bad, be extra careful and give motorcyclists extra room.
