Earlier today, a major construction crane collapsed on top of the Tappan Zee Bridge during rush hour. While no vehicle was directly hit by the crane, many cars were involved in accidents attempting to get out of the way. Rockland County Executive announced that three people were injured from these accidents.
The new Tappan Zee Bridge has been under construction for three years, and has already seen its fair share of tragic construction incidents. In March, a tugboat hit a construction barge, killing three crewmembers, and in 2013 a powerboat hit a construction barge killing two.
The incident earlier today drew parallels to a crane collapse in February that killed one and injured three in midtown. Tragically, many of these instances of failed equipment can be blamed on negligence on behalf of the Construction Company or faulty equipment that has not been inspected properly.
