In an unfortunate blow to the City’s campaign to make NYC’s streets safer to pedestrians, took a hit yesterday when a 15-yr old girl in Williamsburg, Brooklyn was hit by a city bus while crossing a street on her way to school. The driver apparently failed to yield under the city’s Right of Way Law. The Right of Way Law made failing to yield a misdemeanor last year. (CBS)
The driver of the bus was arrested and charged with not exercising due care. According to ABC-7, Transport Workers Union leaders say they support Vision Zero, but believe arresting bus drivers is taking things too far. Furthermore, they believe that “safety upgrades like dedicated left turn signals at busy intersections are long overdue.” (ABC-7)
As of late last night, there was some concern the 15-yr old victim may have to have one of her legs amputated. (CBS)
