Summertime usually means time off, and lots of traveling to enjoy the long, hot days. Here in the metro New York area, we have a variety of places to travel to, from as close as the Jersey Shore to halfway across the globe. We also have a variety of means to get there: car, plane, train, bus, and more. In the midst of being excited for the upcoming vacations to make the most of this short summer season, there are some safety tips we should remember to make sure we avoid injury.
In the summer here in New York, we are lucky enough to have many resort towns, from the beach to the mountains, just a short car ride away. Before taking off on a journey, you should ensure that your car has the proper safety materials in case something were to happen.
A first aid kit should be kept in the trunk for emergencies, as well as a spare tire and jumper cables, just in case the car experiences some mechanical problems.
Also, a AAA or roadside assistance membership will prove beneficial if something were to happen. Before you start driving, consider having the oil changed, all fluids topped off and your tires properly filled and inspected for defects such as worn tread, puncture damage or bulging sidewalls.
Packing the car can also be quite troublesome. In order to avoid automobile accidents, it is important to be able to see out of every window and mirror in the car, so changing lanes and seeing traffic is as easy as possible while driving. When packing the car, we often “overpack” and have so much stuff that we have no choice but to fill the car up to the roof with bags and items. However, this blocks the crucial viewing points that a driver needs to drive safely. This doesn’t just apply to the rear window, but all of them on the side as well.
When arriving at a new location, such as a hotel or rental home, it is important to immediately note where the closest exits are located. Being in an unfamiliar house in the middle of the night can cause disorientation and if something were to happen, you don’t want to waste crucial moments searching for an exit because you never thought to look earlier.
Sometimes, we just want to relax and take a “staycation” during the summer months and enjoy all that NYC has to offer, since its right here in our backyard. It is important to check both the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in our homes at least twice a year to make sure their batteries are functioning properly. So why not do it this summer?
