It’s almost winter and that means it’s almost ski season for many snow lovers all around the country. Here in New York State, we are lucky to have a number of world class ski mountains and resorts within driving distance of New York City which are perfect for weekend getaways to escape the city and make use of this cold and snowy weather we experience every year.
However, skiing and snowboarding leads to many accidents and injuries and these can result from numerous causes. It is important to take the proper safety precautions before the season starts to make sure you can enjoy your experience and make it injury free.
1) Make sure you equipment is properly functioning and up to date.
Many novice skiers invest in equipment that they use once or twice a season and stash away for the next year. Some of us may have had this equipment for years, but think it’s still in solid condition due to its limited usage. However, equipment gets updated and modernized each year, with the latest safety precautions always being added. Be sure to get your equipment checked by a professional at the mountain or at a local ski shop before you hit the slopes, or, better yet, invest in the new equipment to ensure your safety.
2) Heed to warnings and advisories on the slopes.
Winter weather can bring dangerous conditions: snow, sleet, ice and hail, just to name a few. Sometimes hitting the slopes in these types of severe weather is not the best idea because it can hinder your ability to stay safe. Many mountains will issue advisories or close certain trails when they deem it not safe, so it is in your best interest to follow these regulations. You may be tempted to disregard them because you this is your only ski weekend of the season, but that can increase your chance of injury and the mountain will not be liable because they advised you not to ski. Also, if you cannot see in front of you due to heavy snowfall or if you keep finding yourself slipping on black ice, listen to your gut and don’t try to ski in this weather, where you will have even less control.
3) Don’t Get Ahead of Yourself
Ski slopes are labeled for a reason. Green circles are the easiest, blue squares are for intermediate skiers and black diamonds are for advanced skiers. Do not attempt to ski down a slope that you are not comfortable with or are not prepared for. It can be tempting to join your friends and family on an advanced slope when you’re first starting out, but that can also lead to accidents or injuries, ruining your entire trip and causing a lifetime of anguish. If you have never skied before, take a lesson from a credible instructor so you can feel more comfortable hitting the slopes, as well as learn how to avoid accidents and injuries.
